Vivado MCP servers and AI agent skills

AMD publishes an official Vivado MCP server as part of AMD Ross, a binary for Windows and Linux that starts or attaches to Vivado and runs Tcl in it, alongside an MIT-licensed skill pack. Several community servers do the same job through Vivado's Tcl shell, one of them shared with Quartus, and a paid one adds licence tiers. All of them drive a locally installed, running copy of Vivado. Supported versions differ: AMD tests 2026.1, while some community servers were built on 2019.1.

  • Includes AMD's official server.
  • 8 MCP servers and 2 agent skills listed.

How AI connects to Vivado

An MCP server or skill can only do what Vivado lets programs do. Vivado exposes 2 automation interfaces:

  • Vivado Tcl (Tcl console, batch and Tcl modes) (Tcl): Everything in Vivado is a Tcl command, from create_project and synth_design to report_timing and write_bitstream, and the full command set is listed in UG835. You can run it interactively with vivado -mode tcl, unattended with -mode batch -source, or from the GUI Tcl console. Every MCP server here is a wrapper around this interface: most keep one Tcl process open between calls because Vivado takes a long time to start, and almost all keep a raw Tcl tool as an escape hatch. Documentation
  • Tcl scripting guide and Vivado webserver (Tcl): UG894 covers project and non-project compilation scripts, scripts that run at start-up, Tcl hook scripts, custom DRCs and the Vivado Tcl Store. Community servers use Vivado_init.tcl or a sourced Tcl socket server so that a GUI session you open yourself accepts commands, while AMD's own server starts the built-in Tcl webserver (webserver -start -port 8088) and connects to it. What AMD offers

AMD ships AMD Ross, an agentic AI assistant for its embedded tools. Its download page lists a Vivado MCP Server for Windows and Linux (releases 2026.9.1 and 2026.10.1) and a Vivado AI extension for VS Code that bundles the server, the skills and a documentation-search server. The skills are on GitHub under Xilinx/ross-ai-assistant. AMD says no extra licence is needed beyond your Vivado licence and plans monthly releases.

What you can do with Vivado and AI

  • Take a project from RTL to bitstream in one conversation, with the agent running synthesis and implementation and stopping before write_bitstream if CRITICAL WARNINGs remain.
  • Read timing results as WNS, TNS, WHS and THS, list the worst setup paths, and compare them with the previous run after a constraint or RTL change.
  • Audit clock-domain crossings and write or review XDC constraints with a skill that forbids waiving real violations.
  • Configure an IP core or a Zynq block design from a description, then validate the design and generate its wrapper.
  • Debug on hardware by programming the board, arming an ILA trigger and reading the captured data back, or by reading and driving VIO probes.

Installing

The listings here document setup for Cherry Studio, Claude, Claude Code, Cline, Codex, Codex CLI, Cursor, Devin, GitHub Copilot, GitHub Copilot CLI and VS Code (GitHub Copilot). Install steps, copied from each project's own documentation, are on each listing's page. Most Vivado integrations run on your own computer next to Vivado, so you need Vivado installed and licensed on the same machine unless the listing says otherwise.

Questions

Does AMD have an official MCP server for Vivado?

Yes. AMD distributes a Vivado MCP Server as part of AMD Ross, downloadable for Windows and Linux after signing in with an AMD account, or bundled in the Vivado AI extension for VS Code and Cursor. Its companion skills are open source under the Xilinx GitHub organisation.

Which Vivado versions work with an AI agent?

AMD's FAQ says its server supports Vivado 2020.2 or later and was tested on 2026.1. Community servers differ: vivado-mcp names 2019.1 as its baseline, vconnect accepts 2019.1 or later, and the coreyhahn server was tested on 2023.2 and later.

Can Claude Code drive Vivado?

Yes. AMD's setup guide registers its server with claude mcp add in stdio mode, and most community servers also document Claude Code. The server runs on the machine that has Vivado installed and keeps a Vivado Tcl session open for the agent.

Do I need a separate server for Vivado and Quartus?

Not necessarily. fpga-mcp and the paid SynthPilot cover both, though SynthPilot loads one platform per session. The other servers here are Vivado-only.

AI-generated models, drawings and results must be checked by a qualified engineer before use.
