Altair Inspire MCP servers and AI agent skills

One community MCP server works with Altair Inspire, on Windows only. It doesn't touch the Inspire window you have open: each call starts Inspire in headless batch mode, runs Python against the hwx.inspire API, and returns model data, OptiStruct .h3d result summaries or an exported .fem deck. It was tested with Inspire 2026.0. No official MCP server exists; Inspire's own CoPilot is a help assistant.

How AI connects to Altair Inspire

An MCP server or skill can only do what Altair Inspire lets programs do. Altair Inspire exposes 2 automation interfaces:

  • Inspire Python API (hwx.inspire) (Python): Inspire wraps its GUI framework and core functions (objects, boundary conditions, geometry and graphics) in a Python API, and ships its own Python distribution. Scripts can run in pure batch mode without a UI, as macros from the Python window, or at start-up, and can add ribbons, icons and dialogs. The inspire-mcp server uses the batch route, launching ExecWinEnvInsp.exe with a generated script for every call, so no state carries over between calls. Documentation
  • OptiStruct export and .h3d results (Input files): Inspire's structural analyses export OptiStruct .fem decks and write .h3d result files. The MCP server can export a deck without running the solver and read min and max values from an existing .h3d, which lets an agent check a model or a result without opening the GUI.

What Siemens (formerly Altair) offers

Inspire came to Siemens with Altair and is listed with the Simcenter mechanical simulation products. Altair CoPilot, the AI help assistant in Altair desktop applications, answers from Altair's documentation and knowledge base and can suggest Python snippets in beta; it is not an MCP server, and no official Inspire MCP server has been announced.

What you can do with Altair Inspire and AI

  • Check whether Inspire is installed and which release, without starting it.
  • Open a .stmod model read-only and list parts with mass, volume, material and sheet thickness, plus load cases and contacts.
  • Summarise displacement and von Mises stress per run from an OptiStruct .h3d result.
  • Export an OptiStruct .fem deck for a chosen load case and element size to run elsewhere.
  • Create a simple solid in a fresh headless session with the Python API and save it as a .stmod.
  • Return a JSON-ready result from a custom script, such as the minimum bounding box of every part, for use in a spreadsheet or design review.

Installing

The listings here document setup for Claude Desktop, Codex and Cursor. Install steps, copied from each project's own documentation, are on each listing's page. Most Altair Inspire integrations run on your own computer next to Altair Inspire, so you need Altair Inspire installed and licensed on the same machine unless the listing says otherwise.

Questions

Is there an Altair Inspire MCP server?

Yes, a community one, inspire-mcp, for Windows. It isn't affiliated with Altair or Siemens, and it needs your own licensed Inspire install.

Can Claude change the model open in my Inspire window?

No. The server runs separate headless Inspire processes, so it can read and save files but can't see or edit what you have open. Save your model and point it at the file.

Which Inspire version does it support?

The author tested Inspire 2026.0 on Windows 11. Other releases may work if their batch executor and Python API match, but they aren't tested.

Is it safe to let an agent run Python inside Inspire?

Treat it like running any script yourself. The inspire_run_python tool executes arbitrary code with your user's permissions, so review what the agent sends, keep models backed up and only connect the server to clients you trust.

AI-generated models, drawings and results must be checked by a qualified engineer before use.
