XFOIL MCP servers and AI agent skills

XFOIL has one small community MCP server, xfoil-mcp, which runs your local XFOIL executable to compute lift, drag and moment polars from an airfoil file or NACA code and returns them as CSV with the run folder for tracing. It was last updated in November 2025 and has few users. XFOIL's author publishes no AI tooling. Building XFOIL natively needs X11 headers, so the project suggests a Docker recipe on macOS and Linux.

How AI connects to XFOIL

An MCP server or skill can only do what XFOIL lets programs do. XFOIL exposes 1 automation interface:

  • Menu-driven commands and polar save files (Command line): XFOIL is an interactive, menu-driven program rather than a library. Viscous or inviscid analysis, inverse design, geometry edits such as flap deflection and thickness changes, and polar accumulation are all typed commands, and results go to airfoil coordinate and polar save files. Integrations therefore run the executable and read the files it writes, rather than calling an API; xfoil-mcp keeps a work directory for each run so the inputs behind a polar can be checked later. What MIT (open source) offers

XFOIL is distributed by its author from an MIT web page under the GNU GPL; the latest listed download is version 6.97 for Unix and Win32, with a third-party macOS build. The page describes the analysis and design features and release conditions but no AI assistant or MCP server, so there is no official integration as of this check.

What you can do with XFOIL and AI

  • Compute a polar for a NACA 2412 or your own coordinate file over a range of angles of attack at a given Reynolds and Mach number.
  • Return alpha, CL, CD and CM as CSV for a spreadsheet, plot or optimisation loop.
  • Keep each run's working folder and inputs so you can trace which settings produced a polar.
  • Compare polars at several Reynolds numbers before choosing a section for a wing or propeller blade.
  • Produce an XFOIL polar as reference data for a NACA 0012 CFD validation, as the agentic OpenFOAM workshop kit does with its validation server.

Questions

Is there an XFOIL MCP server?

Yes, one community server: xfoil-mcp from Three-Little-Birds, under the MIT licence. Install it from its Git URL; the uvx shortcut in its README needs a PyPI package that wasn't published at this check.

Does xfoil-mcp include XFOIL?

No. Download XFOIL from the MIT page and put the executable on your PATH or point XFOIL_BIN at it. The project's Docker recipe installs XFOIL from the distribution's package instead.

What does it return?

A CSV polar whose first four columns are alpha, CL, CD and CM, plus any extra columns XFOIL writes, such as transition locations, together with the work directory and run metadata.

What inputs does a polar request take?

An airfoil name and its coordinate data (or a NACA code), a list of angles of attack, a Reynolds number and a Mach number. The bundled example sweeps from -2 to 12 degrees in half-degree steps at Re 1.2 million.

Can I run it without installing XFOIL natively?

Yes. The README gives a Docker recipe that installs the distribution's xfoil package inside a python:3.13-slim container and runs the quickstart there, which avoids building XFOIL against XQuartz or X11 headers on macOS and Linux.

AI-generated models, drawings and results must be checked by a qualified engineer before use.
