What it can do
- 71 read-only tools cover program blocks, PLC data types, tags and constants, watch and force tables, external sources and cross-references.
- Exports blocks and types as SIMATIC SD documents (.s7dcl/.s7res), source files or SimaticML, following a tia.json file that mirrors TIA Portal's export-format settings.
- Short git-style commands (tia connect, tia pull, tia push) export the program to a folder and import only the files Git reports as changed, with a preview by default.
- Project-changing tools (create, rename, delete, move, import) are registered only when the server starts with --allow-write, so a read-only setup never lists them.
Limitations
- Windows only; needs .NET Framework 4.8, a running TIA Portal and membership in the Siemens TIA Openness group.
- Imports replace blocks and types of the same name, and tag tables can't be imported back.
Install
Install the "TIA Portal MCP-Server" extension (JHeilingbrunner.vscode-tiaportal-mcp), restart VS Code and run "TIA Portal: Add MCP Server Configuration"; it writes .vscode\mcp.json, .mcp.json, .cursor\mcp.json or .codex\config.toml for the clients you tick.Source: github.com/heilingbrunner/vscode-tiaportal-mcp#add-server
