CALPUFF AI integrations

No MCP server or agent skill for CALPUFF is listed yet (checked 4 Nov 2026). Nothing targets CALPUFF yet: no MCP server, no agent skill and no vendor AI. The system runs as separate CALMET, CALPUFF and CALPOST executables, each reading a long keyword control file, so an agent integration would generate CALMET.INP and CALPUFF.INP, launch each stage and read the outputs. Pick the code version first, because the EPA-approved 5.8.5 build and the newer Version 7 differ in options.

How AI connects to CALPUFF

An MCP server or skill can only do what CALPUFF lets programs do. CALPUFF exposes 2 automation interfaces:

  • Control files (CALMET.INP, CALPUFF.INP, CALPOST.INP) (Input files): Each program reads a control file split into numbered input groups. In CALPUFF.INP, Input Group 0 names every input and output file and its path, and later groups set model options, technical variables and output choices. Point, line, volume and area sources with constant or cyclical emissions go in the control file itself, while arbitrarily varying emissions sit in separate files such as PTEMARB.DAT and VOLEMARB.DAT. Documentation
  • Command-line execution (Command line): CALPUFF runs as CALPUFF filename and CALMET as CALMET filename from a DOS command line, each taking the control file as its argument. A full study chains geophysical preprocessors such as TERREL and MAKEGEO, meteorological processors, CALMET, CALPUFF and CALPOST, so automation is a matter of writing each stage's control file and calling the executables in order. What Lakes Environmental offers

Lakes Environmental maintains and distributes CALPUFF free of charge from calpuff.org and sells the CALPUFF View interface, which supports the EPA-approved 5.8 code and Versions 6 and 7. Neither site mentions an AI assistant, an MCP server or an API. CALPUFF View offers QA tools and visualisation, not scripting.

What an integration for CALPUFF could do

  • Write a CALPUFF.INP for a set of point and area sources, with Input Group 0 pointing at the right CALMET.DAT and emission files.
  • Check that a control file matches the EPA-approved 5.8.5 option set before a regulatory run.
  • Chain CALMET, CALPUFF and CALPOST runs for a study and gather each stage's output files.
  • Set up CALPOST visibility processing with the Method 8 settings described for the approved CALPOST version.

Know of one, or building one?

If an MCP server or agent skill for CALPUFF exists, tell us and we'll check it and list it. You can also ask for one, which helps builders see demand.

Questions

Is there a CALPUFF MCP server?

No, as of 4 November 2026. There's no MCP server or agent skill for CALPUFF, and Lakes Environmental hasn't announced one. Existing helpers on GitHub are R and Python scripts for preparing inputs.

Can an AI agent run CALPUFF?

In principle, because every stage is a command-line program driven by a text control file. No packaged tool does it yet, so the agent would have to write the files and run the executables on your machine.

Which CALPUFF version should an integration target?

The EPA-approved system is CALPUFF and CALMET 5.8.5 (level 151214) with CALPOST 6.221. Version 7 adds new source types such as roadways and flares but isn't the approved regulatory version.

AI-generated models, drawings and results must be checked by a qualified engineer before use.
