ngspice MCP servers and AI agent skills

ngspice is reachable from an agent through community MCP servers that either launch the ngspice executable in batch mode or load it as a shared library, and through skill packs that write testbenches and run them. Because ngspice is free and runs natively on Windows, macOS and Linux, it is often the default simulator in servers that also support LTspice. None of these projects comes from the ngspice developers.

  • No official ngspice developers (open source) server yet.

How AI connects to ngspice

An MCP server or skill can only do what ngspice lets programs do. ngspice exposes 3 automation interfaces:

  • Shared library (libngspice) (Other): Built as a .so or .dll, ngspice can be loaded by another program that sends it a netlist, runs the simulation in a separate thread, reads data back at each time point through callbacks, and can stop, alter parameters and resume. Chapter 19 of the manual documents the interface. The D-language ngspice-mcp server uses this route, which avoids parsing files but ties the server to a compatible library build on your machine. Documentation
  • Batch mode and the ngspice user's manual (Command line): The ngspice executable can run a netlist in batch mode without interaction, which is how Diode's spice-sim skill and the spicelib-based servers use it: they write a netlist, run the simulator and parse the files it produces. The user's manual for ngspice-47, linked here, documents the netlist syntax, analyses, the interactive command language and the device and XSPICE models that an agent has to get right when it writes a testbench. Documentation
  • KiCad schematic editor as a front end (Other): The ngspice site documents KiCad's schematic editor (Eeschema) as a graphical front end for ngspice, so circuits drawn in KiCad can carry SPICE models and be simulated there. Skill packs such as kicad-happy take the other route and generate standalone ngspice testbenches from subcircuits they find in KiCad files. Documentation

What ngspice developers (open source) offers

ngspice is an open-source project and its developers haven't announced an MCP server or AI assistant. The project's news page records ngspice-47, released on 11 August 2026, with features such as a pyplot command for Python matplotlib plotting, and nothing about agent integration.

What you can do with ngspice and AI

  • Run AC, transient and DC operating-point analyses on a netlist and get magnitude, phase or time-domain data back for plotting.
  • Characterise analog blocks such as an LDO, OTA or two-stage op amp, extracting phase margin, PSRR, noise and pole-zero locations.
  • Sweep component values in parallel runs to see how a filter or regulator responds to tolerances.
  • Add a focused testbench for one behaviour, such as start-up or current limit, to a circuits-as-code design and run it in CI.
  • Simulate subcircuits detected in a KiCad schematic to check filter corners and divider ratios before layout.

Installing

The listings here document setup for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cline, Codex, Continue, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI, Google Antigravity, Windsurf, Zed and opencode. Install steps, copied from each project's own documentation, are on each listing's page. Most ngspice integrations run on your own computer next to ngspice, so you need ngspice installed and licensed on the same machine unless the listing says otherwise.

Questions

Is there an official ngspice MCP server?

No. As of 4 November 2026 the ngspice project hasn't published one; the servers and skills here are community work.

Which servers support ngspice?

ltspice-mcp treats ngspice as a full simulator alongside LTspice, spicelib-mcp uses it by default, and gtnoble's ngspice-mcp loads it as a shared library. Skill packs from kicad-happy, Diode and Arcadia-1 also run ngspice.

Do I need LTspice installed to use ltspice-mcp with ngspice?

No. Its documentation says ngspice simulation and analysis don't need LTspice; only editing LTspice .asc schematics does.

Can an agent design transistor-level analog circuits with ngspice?

The analog-circuit-skills pack shows the pattern for comparators, OTAs and LDOs on predictive PTM models. For a real process you would swap in your foundry's models, which these skills don't include.

AI-generated models, drawings and results must be checked by a qualified engineer before use.
