What it can do
- Open-source engines run without extra software: pandapower and PyPSA come with the base install, and OpenDSS, ANDES, Egret, surge, HOPE, GenX and LTspice are opt-in extras.
- Commercial tools are reached through their own Python or COM interfaces: psspy for PSS/E (open and solve a case, plus a guarded call to any listed psspy function), Easy SimAuto for a running PowerWorld Simulator (power flow, N-1/N-2, PTDF, LODF, Jacobian), and the PowerFactory Python module (load flow, short circuit, contingency, RMS simulation, adding equipment, PDF export).
- The PSCAD server attaches to or launches PSCAD through mhi.pscad, edits component parameters, runs projects and simulation sets, and parses .psout/.out results, with a 30-second watchdog for a frozen or modal PSCAD.
- A shared PowerIO case format converts networks between tools, so a PSS/E .raw case can be loaded into pandapower, PyPSA, ANDES or Egret, or written out for OpenDSS.
- An interactive installer picks tools, records local install paths and writes the client configuration for Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Codex CLI.
Limitations
- Wrapper depth differs a lot by tool: PowerFactory, PSCAD and OpenDSS have broad tool sets, the PSS/E server has a handful of named tools plus a generic psspy call, and PyPSA lists many functions (transformers, links, time series) as future work.
- Commercial tools need their own licensed install on the same machine; PowerWorld must already be running, and PSCAD and PowerFactory automation are Windows-only.
- Marked Alpha on PyPI (0.4.x), with no release tags in the repository.
Install
pip install powermcp
powermcp install # pick tools, capture local paths, write your MCP client configpip install powermcp[psse] # add PSS/E support
powermcp config set psse.python_lib "C:\Program Files\PTI\PSSE36\36.2\PSSPY311"MCP servers and skills run code on your computer. Review the source before installing.
